It’s a pretty exciting thing to be in the process of starting a WordPress website or a blog! But it can also be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if it’s not something you’ve done before. Overall, it’s a pretty simple process in and of itself and SiteGround makes it even easier with only 4 steps – which is part of the reason we love hosting our own site with them so much (among a huge list of other reasons)!
We have been hosting our WordPress website with them for a while now after being with another host for our 2 first years of blogging. We couldn’t have been happier making that switch! Their level of customer service, dedication, and ease of use are absolutely out of this world.
A few other reasons we absolutely love SiteGround and found their pricing worthwhile are:
- They have an amazing uptime
- Siteground gives a fast speed for loading websites (great for SEO)
- Instant WordPress Support
- Very Affordable
- Free Site Transfer
- Free SSL Certificate
WordPress is one of the best platforms for new websites or people like us who don’t know full CSS and need an easy content management system (CMS) that does everything. If you need something done on your website, there is a plugin somewhere for it! Not only will you find plugins that help you customize your website but you’ll find hundreds of thousands of various themes that allow you to fully customize the look and feel of your site as well.

Your WordPress website will be as unique as you and your content!
And your host needs to live up to that. If you are looking at starting a blog and don’t really know where to start from you can check out our 5,000 word guide for starting a blog with WordPress from scratch here! But before you can start a blog you have to know how to start your WordPress website with SiteGround.
Step 1) Choose a Hosting Plan
SiteGround offers a few different options depending on your needs. There is basically a small, medium and large plan named StartUp, GrowBig, and GoGeek. Let’s outline them a bit.

StartUp

This plan is for beginners and is most likely where most bloggers or newbie websites will begin. It costs only $3.95/month (USD). You do typically have to pay it out in one lump sum, so be prepared for that. But none the less, this is probably the best bang for your buck as a new blogger on a tight budget!
This plan includes:
- One Website (domain)
- Up To 10,000 Monthly Visitors
- 10GB of Web Space
- Free 24Hr Support
- Plus all SiteGround’s essentials features
GrowBig

The ‘medium’ plan is a good value for someone who might own multiple websites or domains. This plan will give you access to the essential features as well as the premium features. This plan costs $5.95/month (USD).
This plan includes:
- Web Hosting On Multiple Sites
- All Basic Features
- 20GB of Web Space
- Up To 20,000 Monthly Visitors
- Increased Response Times
- SiteGround SuperCacher
- Plus More Basic & Premium Features
GoGeek

The final plan to choose from is the GoGeek plan. This is the go-to plan for people who have large websites or focus on e-commerce. Eventually, as your blog or website grows and grows you may find yourself switching to this plan! This plan will cost you $11.95/month (USD).
This plan includes:
- Unlimited Websites
- All Basic, Premium & Advanced Features
- 30GB of Web Space
- 100,000 Monthly Visitors
- So, so many more features
Those are the three plans available for your WordPress website, each of them offers something a bit different and depend on your website site. At the very beginning, you may not have a ton of traffic (it’s almost guaranteed you won’t) so you can start off with the StartUp plan and as your WordPress website grows, so can your hosting plan. It’s very easy to upgrade to the next plan and Siteground will make that change for you.
You can view more detailed descriptions of each plan here and if you’re ready, you can start your hosting here.
Step 2) Choose Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is the next step in building your WordPress website and arguably one of the most difficult and important. Picking a domain name for us was super hard, but certainly isn’t for everyone.
You want to pick a name that is timeless, not to niche-y, and easy for your readers to write and remember. When you’ve picked one, select ‘register a new domain‘ and type in your domain name. Wait a few seconds and it will verify the availability and then you’ll be good to go.
If you already have a domain name you can click ‘I already have a domain.’ It will prompt you to type in your domain.
Step 3) Complete Your Purchase and Confirm

Now it’s just a matter of completing your purchase with SiteGround by confirming the details of your purchase.
The first thing it will ask is for you to confirm your plan, the location (there are only a few server locations you can choose from, we would recommend choosing the closest one to you), and the length of time you’d like to purchase your plan for.
The second thing you’ll want to confirm is any extra services you may want to purchase. If you are entering a new domain you will have to pay for the domain registration. The domain privacy and SG Site Scanner are optional, so read into each one and see if it’s something you would be interested in.
We do however recommend opting into domain privacy because by law your site needs to include your information. This will help keep yours safe.
Review once more all your information and then proceed to put in your payment information. After you have completed this, make sure to write down your username and password.
You’ve now completed the hosting set-up of your WordPress website!
Step 4) Install WordPress

Like we mentioned before, WordPress is by far one of the easiest and most customizable content management systems available. SiteGround will help you with the install of WordPress or you can do it by yourself. If you do it on your own via SiteGround you’ll want to follow these steps:
- Login to SiteGround
- Go To My Accounts
- Go To cPanel
- Scroll Down And Select WordPress Installer
- Click ‘Install’
Now just fill out the necessary details for your WordPress site. Make sure you remember or write down your login’s. After you are done click the final ‘install’ button.
If you want you can also download WordPress from their website which you can access here. However, this would be a bit more complicated to direct your website to Siteground’s hosting so we recommend just doing the one-click install through your cPanel.
It’s now time to officially login to your site! With your created credentials go to http://yournewblogname.com/wp-admin and login. Viola! You officially have your own self-hosted WordPress website through SiteGround.
Now it’s time to select a theme (we recommend ThemeForest or ElegantThemes) and go through the necessary steps to create your custom website or to start a blog (you can view our step by step guide to starting a blog here)!
And there you have it! The 4 easy steps that allow you to start a WordPress website with SiteGround. If you’ve always thought about starting your own website or blog but were hesitant and thought perhaps it was too difficult, we hope this post clears those doubts.
When we started Toques & Boots we had absolutely no background in blogging or website content management. WordPress was such an easy tool to use and has enabled us to create a blog that is uniquely us. And it will be a great resource for you too!
