This post is going to go through the steps you need to take when you start your blog with SiteGround. If you haven’t already read our in-depth (over 5,000 words) post on how you should start a blog, you can do so here.
First, we should start by stating why we recommend SiteGround so much.
While yes we are affiliated with them and do make a small commission (at no extra cost to you) from each person that uses our site to sign up, that’s not why we recommend them.
We recommend them because in our experience they are simply the best. We were with a previous host (the name has a colour in it) and the customer service was treacherous. When we started our blog we picked that host because other bloggers had recommended it (and like us, they were affiliates of that company).
But getting through to someone to get help was like pulling teeth. Simply horrid customer service.
And when you did eventually get someone they were typically a bit rude and very unhelpful. And after a minimum 20-minute wait for someone, the last thing you want is terrible customer service. We also noticed that Google Page Insights was reporting that our site was slow due to our server. Which can come down to your host, among a slew of other things. Having a slow load time is not reader-friendly and something we decided to fix right away.
So we took those two things and did our own research and came to the decision to switch to SiteGround. A nightmare of events later (due to our previous host) we officially switched.
And it was the best decision we ever made for our blog.
Not only has the customer service been OUT OF THIS WORLD, but our server time has improved by almost 2 seconds! Which is a huge plus!
Some other reasons we decided to switch to SiteGround were:
- They have an amazing uptime
- Siteground gives a fast speed for loading websites
- Instant WordPress Support
- Very Affordable
- Free Site Transfer
- Free SSL Certificate
Let’s get to it…Here is exactly how you can start a website with SiteGround, screenshots included!
Step 1: Choose A Hosting Plan
SiteGround offers a few different options depending on your needs. There is basically a small, medium and large plan named StartUp, GrowBig, and GoGeek. Let’s outline them a bit.
This plan is for beginners and is most likely where most bloggers or newbie websites will begin. It costs only $3.95/month (that pricing is in USD). You do typically have to pay it out in one lump sum, so be prepared for that. But none the less, this is probably the best bang for your buck as a new blogger on a tight budget!
This plan includes:
- One Website (domain)
- Up To 10,000 Monthly Visitors
- 10GB of Web Space
- Free 24Hr Support
- Plus all SiteGround’s essentials features
The ‘medium’ plan is a good value for someone who might own multiple websites or domains. This plan will give you access to the essential features as well as the premium features. This plan costs $5.95/month (again USD).
This plan includes:
- Web Hosting On Multiple Sites
- All Basic Features
- 20GB of Web Space
- Up To 20,000 Monthly Visitors
- Increased Response Times
- SiteGround SuperCacher
- Plus More Basic & Premium Features
The final plan to choose from is the GoGeek plan. This is the go-to plan for people who have large websites or focus on e-commerce. Eventually, as your blog or website grows and grows you may find yourself switching to this plan! This plan will cost you $11.95/month (if you didn’t pick it up already, that’s in USD).
This plan includes:
- Unlimited Websites
- All Basic, Premium & Advanced Features
- 30GB of Web Space
- 100,000 Monthly Visitors
- So, so many more features
You can find a full detailed list of the differences between each plan here.
Among all of these plans, choose the one that works best for you. If you need to change plans in the future, contact SiteGround and they will give you a hand.
Step 2: Choose Your Domain Name
Choosing a domain name is the next step, and arguably one of the most difficult. Because picking a domain name, for anyways, was super hard! You want to pick a name that is timeless, not to niche-y, and easy for your readers to write and remember. When you’ve picked one, select ‘register a new domain‘ and type in your domain name. Wait a few seconds and it will verify the availability and then you’ll be good to go.
If you already have a domain name you can click ‘I already have a domain.’ It will prompt you to type in your domain.
Step 3: Complete Your Purchase And Confirm
Now it’s just a matter of completing your purchase by confirming your plan and it’s options, and entering your billing information.
The first thing it will ask is for you to confirm your plan, the location (there are only a few server locations you can choose from, we would recommend choosing the closest one to you), and the length of time you’d like to purchase your plan for.
The second thing you’ll want to confirm is any extra services you may want to purchase. If you are entering a new domain you will have to pay for the domain registration. The domain privacy and SG Site Scanner are optional, so read into each one and see if it’s something you would be interested in. We do however recommend opting into domain privacy because by law your site needs to include your information. This will help keep yours safe.
Review once more all your information and then proceed to put in your payment information. After you have completed this, make sure to write down your username and password!
HURRAY! Finally, you’ve completed the set-up of your website through SiteGround and are not ready to complete your blog and start writing posts!
Step 4: Install WordPress
