how to travel as a couple pros and cons

There are pros and cons to everything and they are usually weighed out before doing something major. We took some of the guessing out of it for you.

Here is our list for pros and cons of travelling as a couple:

  • Pro: You are with your significant other all the time!
Con: You are with your significant other…all the time.

Don’t get us wrong, we wouldn’t have decided to pick up and leave everything behind to travel long-term if we didn’t think we were able to do it as a couple. But that being said, it’s not easy. Especially at first.
Most likely you’re in a foreign country and don’t know anyone, so you rely on each other for everything from company to travel plans. It can be quite difficult to be around someone 24/7 and not feel like you have your own space. So when you are travelling ensure you find the time to get away and do your own thing every once and a while if you are feeling a bit smothered. Don’t be afraid to ask for some time alone either.

  • Pro: You always have a partner to do things with
Con: You both may want to do different things.

It’s all about compromise here! If someone wants to do something and the other is opposed to it just find a happy medium, or revert to the pro-con above and do the activity on your own. Compromise by perhaps finding a similar activity you both would enjoy or maybe by finding something in the future that you both can agree on.

Our unhappy faces after my first time mountain biking. I flipped my bike and Andy's back tire came off after a jump. I compromised and did something I wasn't keen on and ended up actually enjoying myself! Sometimes compromising and trying new thinks can surprise you! We were just unhappy from the injuries otherwise it was great!

  • Pro: You have someone to help you pay for everything
Con: Money can be the route of many arguments

It’s great having two people to pay for all the things you’ll eat, see and do in your travels. But as most couples know money can lead to arguments. The typical, “I paid for that, you pay for this.” or “I don’t want to go into debt from this whole thing.” If something like that does arise just always remember money is something to help you gain experiences and if you aren’t comfortable spending an excessive amount your partner should understand and you two can discuss alternative plans. The golden rule should be applied here: Don’t go to bed angry. You are going to fight as you travel, you’re bound to (sorry but it’s guaranteed) so just remember at the end of the day you can always talk it through.

Travelling at a couple can be extremely challenging at times but it is also insanely rewarding!

There are always going to be ups and downs but if you make it work you’ll be able to share amazing memories together! It all comes down to how much effort you put in to it.
